What is the Makiko Method of Postural Education through Movement for health, balance, and flexibility, and why is it valuable for me? Efficient use of body and mind is the key to creating an ergonomic posture. But most people’s posture has been distorted by lack of teaching, wrong ideas and bad habits. Everyone has their ideal posture hidden - deep inside their body and mind. But you can reveal your true posture.

The Past …For good posture - chest forward, shoulders back, tighten the abdominals, and squeeze the butt.

The Reality…This military posture is worse because you can’t breathe and move freely – it is artificial - it’s not who you really are. In this un-natural state, you develop mental stress, physical pain, and lack of harmony in movement. You become tired, stiff and inflexible. And then, your spirit starts choking and your attitude changes for the worse because you are not free and natural. Welcome to Bad Posture.

The Present and Future…All of us need to move, breath, and feel freely. And everybody can move gracefully. However, most of us have never learned how to stand and move properly and naturally. The Makiko Method of Postural Education through Movement will re-train your body and mind so you can learn to move with the grace, sensitivity and energy of a natural being. The Makiko Method uses specific breathing, movement and posture exercises. This special program applies for individual body needs, depending on which type of movement is best for you. Your mind and body are challenged with questions about your feelings and sensations, as we guide you through the movements. You become sensitive to the “right way” for you. You learn a better way to communicate with yourself and how to move each part of your body more effortlessly. As a result, you and your body will be able to respond properly to every event and situation with more balance and flexibility.

Shisei. The Japanese word for both “posture” and “attitude”. Most people think that the physical aspects are posture, and the mental aspects are attitude. But you really can’t separate them — they are always one. Your attitude about your life is reflected in your posture, and your posture reflects your attitude towards life. Your posture is who you really are, so it is important to find your best possible posture.

About the founder: Makiko Oka Holds an MA in Dance Education, from New York University. And a BA in Drama Studies and Post Graduate Diploma in Dance Research from Nihon University (Tokyo). Also certified in Pilates, Gyrotonic, NGH hypnotherapy, Ericsonian hypnosis, NLP, Feldenkrais Method, Cranial Sacral Therapy, Japanese Hari, and Food Therapy.
