Before saying anything else, I'd like to invite you to tonight's screening of the documentary film CRUDE: The Real Price of Oil about a catastrophic environmental crime in the Amazon that dwarfs the Gulf oil leak but gets a lot less press. We're showing it at 8 pm tonight, Aug 3, for a $10 donation. We'll have a short discussion afterward.

Kutsukake TokijroLast Saturday we set a new performance attendance record at CRS when 66 people attended a benefit performance of the Japanese gangster play Kutsukake Tokijiro. Amazingly, it didn't even feel crowded and the A/C was felt but not heard.

Go GreenWith several arts events on tap this month, you can help us to break the record again. Each of them will feature opportunities for you to meet the artists, ask questions, and give feedback.

If you come to CRS this Friday evening between 7:15 – 9 pm, you can receive free bodywork and nutritious snacks courtesy of Sacred Space NYC, a new wellness business.

OmarSpeaking of wellness, healer Omar returns to CRS this month. Omar is one of the most experienced healers we have met, having worked on thousands of clients over several decades while assimilating more therapeutic techniques than most people could even name.

After teaching in India and the French Riviera, respectively, yoga/meditation instructor Evelina Lotte and Butoh dance instructor Tanya Calamoneri resume teaching at CRS this month.

Later in the month we will host the extraordinary Yuko Takahashi Dance Company from Sendai, Japan for what promises to be an exciting workshop in modern dance, and while it won't begin until October, I'd like to announce that we'll be hosting a three-month intensive Performance Study Program led by Daria Fain, suitable to anyone interested in presence, performance, improvisation, composition, and group work.

Namaste,

Kutsukake Tokijiro

Thank You to the 66 people who attended the Benefit Night for "KUTSUKAKE TOKIJIRO" at CRS last night! You set a new record for performance audience at CRS! The show was very moving, entertaining and professional. If you missed it, you'll definitely want to catch the next production.

gang dance from Kutsukake TokijiroA number of great things came out of this event for us, most important of which are the new and strengthened relationships with the many wonderful artists in this group. We certainly hope to continue working with Jun Kim and Kayoko Sakoh of Kurotama Kikaku, as well as their cast and crew. Their work should be seen on a much larger stage.

On a more practical level, their crew found that it is easy to go up onto the roof and cover our skylights to black them out when necessary (using black fabric from Ninagawa's recent Lincoln Center production of Musashi, no less), a problem that has long dogged us. They also brought 20 very well designed folding high chairs from Japan Society, which allows patrons sitting in the back row to see the stage much more clearly. This is what enabled us to comfortable seat 60+ without having to resort to using bulky seating platforms. Now we can have the best of both worlds: space for classes and seating for events.

And it's not a moment too soon. We have four more shows coming up later this month, as well as a launch party for a new wellness company this Friday evening. Check it all out on our upcoming events page!Read more
